A few days ago, the shipment crossed into Mali and began tracing the overland road toward the capital. Today it did the thing the whole summer has pointed at. It arrived in Bamako, the capital of Mali and the final destination for this shipment.
Four trackers, one road, minutes apart
This morning, within a few minutes of each other, all four trackers reported from RN6, the main road that runs through Bamako beside the Niger River: MACONA-TT-1, MACONA-TT2, MACONA-TT3, and MACONA-TT4. Each one now reads 4,548 miles from home. After an ocean crossing and three countries, seeing all four light up in the same city, on the same road, is the confirmation we had been waiting for.
What happens now
Arriving in the city is not the end. It is the start of the most important part. Our volunteers in Bamako will take possession of the shipment out of local customs, a step that takes time and patience. Then, before anything is handed out, every item is reconciled against what left Maryland and sorted for distribution. This is how MACONA keeps its promise that what you give reaches the families it was meant for.
Three months on the road, and why the next bag cannot wait
These bags were packed in Maryland on May 4. They reached Bamako on August 5. That is about three months in motion, across all of May, June, and July and into August, by truck, by ship, through four countries, and over 4,548 miles. One shipment takes a full season to arrive.
That is the reason continual giving matters so much. If MACONA sends one shipment and waits for it to land before starting the next, families wait a quarter of a year between deliveries. Real, steady impact comes from overlapping shipments, more than one moving at the same time, so that as one is being distributed in Bamako another is already on the water. That pipeline runs entirely on donations, and it needs both kinds: gifts in kind, the clothing, hygiene products, and medicine that fill the bags, and gifts in dollars, the freight, customs, and tracking that carry them across the world. A recurring gift, month after month, is what keeps more than one shipment moving at once.
From here to a family's hands
In Bamako, MACONA distributes the contents of these bags, clothing, hygiene products, and over-the-counter medicine, directly to the families who need them.
